Letters [such as these principally written by Johanne Nielsen] have bridged the Atlantic since the earliest days of Danish immigration, and they are documents of great historical interest because they express the thoughts and experiences of the immigrants in their own words. In these letters, as H. Arnold Barton put it, "for the first time in human history, (common people) began to speak directly to posterity."

These letters are unusually rich because Denmark had the first sound system of public education in Europe, so Danish immigrants were well prepared to express themselves.

Signs of Life Lebenszeichen - The Correspondence of German Pows at Camp Algona, Iowa 1943-46

Translations of 282 letters to and from Germans who were prisoners of war at Iowa's Camp Algona during World War II. Along with 150 photos and two dozen related documents contributed by the men and their families, the letters tell the story of the POW experience. Despite humane treatment and good conditons in the camp, the letters reflect the isolation and longing for home and family the men felt as well as recording the day-to-day life of the camp. A companion book is CAMP PAPERS, which is a collection of two camp newspapers.
